Top Ten Seo Tips

When you are setting up a website it is important that you carry out your SEO just right too ensure the best rankings possible. In this post I will share what I feel are the most important tips when it comes to SEO from the very start to the end. These tips are not necessarily in order of importance but more put together in order to help.

1. Domain

If you’re main market is within the UK then it would probably be a good idea to purchase a UK domain and have your site hosted on UK servers. This should ensure the most traffic for your website.

2. Include Keywords Within Domain and Brand

By no means does this mean have your domain like “www.keyword-keyword-keyword.com/.co.uk”.  Try to stick to something not quite as spammy for example our website “www.xyz.com” not only does this include a keyword but it is also branding. Either try to stick to one hyphen or include one keyword after/before your company name.

3. Create As Much Content As Possible About Your Subjects/Products

Before you start or during the setting up of your site start writing up as much content as possible for your website. After this has been done ensure you split the content up into sections, this will help with the navigation of your website later on.

4. Start Your Keyword Research
This can be done during, before or after the writing of content, as long as you ensure that you add keywords into your content, this will help with the ranking of your website. This can be done using many tools, however I prefer to use Google AdWords Keyword Tool as it tells you everything you need to know, from the monthly searches a certain keyword gets to the yearly searches.

5. Choose 4-5 Main Keywords for Your Site

After carrying you carry out a keyword analysis you should ideally be able to choose 4 or 5 main keywords for your website, these will be your primary keywords. Along with this try to decide on a few secondary keywords which are closely associated with your primary keywords. By choosing these keywords you can also write content based on them, this will improve your keywords efficiency.

6. Sit Down and Sort Out The Navigation On Your Site

Ensure that you put a lot of time into this, as the easier your site is to navigate the more likely it is for people to stay on your website and find just what they need. Ideally you will want your Primary keywords to be used as the headers for the main sub sections and your secondary keywords to be used as headers for content pages under each primary keyword header.

7. Re-write content From Knowledge Gained During Keyword Research

This by no means, means that you have to totally re-write you content and stuff your content full of keywords as this can only end up bad for your website. All you have to do is ensure that you write paragraphs of content that are relevant to the page with certain keywords within the right place, whist also making sure your content makes sense. While you are doing this however ensure that you do not write too much information and stay on subject, as readers may stop reading your content if there is too much or if it becomes irrelevant.

8. Structure Each and Every Page

Now you have your rich keyword balanced content begin to structure each page, treat each page like it is a website.  Starting from the very top
Website Structure

Your page title should be relevant to your content and be one of your primary or secondary keywords.

Meta Keywords (although not very important) should only include4-5 keywords associated to the page.

Meta descriptions should be a short and to the point paragraph, no longer than 156 words. Also ensure that you add one or two keywords into the description as this can enable people who are searching for the specific keywords to end up on your page.

Ensure that you carry out both external and internal linking on your page as they can be very important, when you are linking externally ensure that have a high PR as these are much better and can get your website ranked much higher. When it comes to internal linking just ensure that you are linking to relevant pages on your site and do not insert to many links on your site as you may be penalized by Google.

When it comes to the actual content on your page make sure that you use H1 and H2 tags using these for primary and secondary keywords, then following these with the most important content.

Finally any images that you are using on your website should contain alt tags so that if a computer somewhere has  a problem loading your page they can see what the image displays due to the text.

9. Proof Read Everything and Get Second Opinions

Now you have everything set up on your site, before you set your website as live ensure that you proof read through everything and get second opinions from friends or work colleagues as they may be able to help you with some things.

10. Finally Construct Your Site and Get It Out on The World Wide Web

Now that everything has been done to ensure that your website is just how you want it construct it all and publish it so everyone can see it.
