Over the weekend Google sent a letter to the policy makers within
France about a proposal that the French made in which they intended to
charge Google for linking to their content.
France 24, a major French news website, has reported that Google has
threatened some French publishers by telling them they are not will to
pay to link to any of their content, and should they be forced to, Google is willing to simply stop linking to them.
The official letter which Google sent to the French policy makers,
which was wrote in French, does not appear to be wrote in such a direct
tone. This letter that Google sent describes and sums up how this
proposal would not only hurt the internet as a whole but also French
readers and even more importantly, the French publishers. Within this
letter Google said that they send around four billion clicks per month
to the publishers out there and about 1 billion of those clicks come
from Google News. Google News is completely free for you to use, there
are absolutely no ads to be seen on Google News, however, Google has an
AdSense program that last year paid out just over $6.5 billion to U.S.
publishers. When it comes to it Google fully believes they are doing
their part when it comes to helping news publishers remain financially
stable.
The French news publishers clearly feel completely different about
all of this. Google are making it look like if the law was to be passed,
Google will simply not involve themselves and remove all of the French
publishers from their index. As many of you may know France and Google
have never seen eye to eye on a large amount of things.
