Google+ is finally taking the first step towards what could be one of
the biggest and most important changes for Google+, which in turn may
help to up the activity on the one year-old social network.
Saurabh Sharma, Google employee announced this news earlier on
Google+, saying that these vanity URL’s will only be available on a
limited basis for the time being
The Verified Accounts
For the time being as stated only some of the major verified accounts
will receive these vanity URL’s, these being profiles like, Delta
Airlines, Britney Spears, Hugh Jackman, Toyota and many others.
Matthew Inman who is the artist behind the Oatmeal comic still does
not have his own vanity URL, this is despite his wish earlier this year,
Inman who is followed quite widely on Twitter joked:
Last night, Tech crunch even reported that this URl which Inman made
up is now redirecting to his actual profile, this however is not the
same as having a vanity URL. If you try the link above it actually does
redirect to his account.
Someday You Will Have Your Own Vanity URL
Google have said that eventually everyone, people or pages, will have
their own vanity URL, but there not sure on when this will happen as of
yet.
When this is rolled out worldwide to everyone though it will be a big
and important step, as the current URL’s are long ugly and impossible
to promote, as they are just a string of numbers. I don’t think anyone
out there would try and advertise their products and services with a
long URL like the Google+ ones
“plus.google.com/101727185624127784991?prsrc=2″
At Google’s I/O conference in June, Google+ Vice President Bradley
Horowitz revealed that custom URLs would be released to the general
public as soon as possible, and even admitted that users “shouldn’t
have to give someone a 16-digit number” to enable them to connect with
other Google+ users out there.
